About This Blog
So the idea for this blog started about four years ago. I decided that I would make a New Year’s resolution to start a blog. It would be the perfect way for me to take part in two of my favorite pastimes: reading other websites and rambling on, making semi-coherent arguments. And like most people’s resolutions, it ended up with the discarded treadmills and smoking cessation hypnosis tapes about a month later. Not out of a lack of desire, I’m just lazy. Every once in a while, the idea would come back into my head but I would always find some reason/excuse not to do it.
Fast-forward to a month ago. The “25 Random Things” fad was spreading across Facebook. I had been enjoying reading others’ notes but was initially resistant to write my own. Why? I think I summed it up in my first random thing:
Sitting down to write this kinda freaks me out. I’m shier than appearances would tell you.
But as I wrote more, I found I was really enjoying myself. I was having a hard time narrowing it down to just 25 things and as I got closer to that arbitrary number in the rules, I wanted to keep going. I even updated my FB status to say that I enjoyed it more than I thought and that maybe I should start that blog…
Then I started researching the various platforms to see which one had what I wanted. I’m a geek and the internet pays my bills so I didn’t want to be lead astray or look foolish (I know some of you are saying, “Too late!”). After a few false starts and many attempted names, here we are.
If you’re still reading this, I’ll let you in on a not too well-kept secret. I’m verbose.
What I think you’ll find here is my perspective and analysis of what’s happening in the world today. And I think we can all agree that there’s a lot happening. I read a ton of blogs, news sites, forums on a variety of topics, and I think the connecting threads that I find will be unique and, hopefully, interesting to anyone besides me. I’ll do my best to keep it entertaining and keep to a regular posting schedule. I also want to hear from you. Blogging isn’t just about the author; the audience is supposed to be part of the conversation. I have plenty of smart friends and we have great discussions about some of the topics I plan on writing about here. I’d like to make some more. So argue with me. Convince me I’m wrong. I’m not so set in my ways yet that my mind can’t be changed.
Which brings it back to the name. The Things on My Mind are all over the place. It’s the best way to play pocket Jacks from the button with a raise in front of you. It’s how the stimulus was too small. It’s why I think I should be a Friar and be able to roast Jeffrey Ross. It’s about the Tigers winning it all this year. It’s about the awesomeness of my wife. Some of these Things are personal, some Things will strike a chord, some Things will fall flat. But I can tell you one Thing: at least I finally did it.
